I call the bride a sunflower goddess. She and her family grew all the sunflowers for this wedding, and she would sing to them as they grew. I had the exciting opportunity to come to their sunflower patch a few days prior to the wedding to photograph Aubrey among them, since they were later cut for bouquets and centerpieces.
The wedding celebration took place at the bride's home. The McCarthy's charming farmhouse from the turn of the century sits on a humble plot of land in Minnetonka, MN. Aubrey grew up in that house, along with her two older sisters. Her dad is a horticulturalist, so every corner of their property is immaculate and full of magical waterfalls, water lilies atop ponds where fish swim, gorgeous plants like the bridal wreath spirea and wisteria... and of course this family has created a habitat for turtles and chickens!
Aubrey & Jesse met in the theater department - which might explain their creative, goofy, unashamed and hilarious personalities! Oh, and the fact that the bridesmaids got ready in the morning to the soundtrack of broadway and Disney musicals. Their theater background also enhanced the bride and groom rap battle that they surprised guests with at the reception! Crazy. One unique element to their relationship is their shared lifestyle of yoga, among other alternative healthy habits, such as drinking kombucha. Check out their engagement photos here and you will see them in their yoga zone! I loved that both Aubrey & Jesse were doing yoga during the getting ready, and then again right before the ceremony! :)
There was a lot of love in the air that day - and I don't just mean between Aubrey & Jesse. They both have experienced tremendous care from family and friends, and it was so fun for me to learn more about the impact that they have all had on each other. Let's just say there were a lot of happy tears (my favorite)! Of course there was playful banter between Aubrey and Jesse's families during the reception, one chanting the Vikings fight song and the other the Packers'. Someone joked with me later, "I know you photograph a lot of intercultural weddings... this counts!"
The magic carried into the evening with the twinkle lights, tiki torches, and finally a sparkler send off. Aubrey & Jesse are adventurous and daring souls, captivated by how alive they feel among nature. That is why they packed their retro pop-up camper and trekked across the U.S. for their honeymoon, landing them in the city where they will make their new home, Portland, Oregon. Thank you for risking the odds in order to be an overflowing joy to each other and the world beyond! Love you guys! Enjoy :)
(Special thanks to my amazing second shooter Steven who risked the fish nibbling at his feet - oh, and potential damage to expensive equipment - while he got into the pond to get the ring shot!!)
